Mainline Train Service Review

11 August 2010

The long distance passenger service operated by Shosholoza Meyl will be re-focusing its services in response to the identified customer demands which currently result in resources being inadequate to offer a predictable service to our passengers. In addition, the cost incurred to run the current service is way above what the business can afford.

“The whole exercise will require a review of the entire mainline train service to ensure that it responds to the demand. In so doing, resources will then be streamlined to meet the revised service, which will enable us to meet our operational demand” said Ms Ngabi Mareko, Chief Operating Officer for Prasa Rail.

Shosholoza Meyl will run a limited service while the travel corridors are being reviewed effective from Thursday 12 August 2010. This process will run for approximately two weeks to allow for a phase-in revised service to meet the demand.

We will ensure that the revised scheduled trains are communicated 72 hours in advance to enable our customers to plan better. All passengers who have already booked their trips are urged to contact the call centre on 0860 00 88 88 to verify the availability of the booked service. Alternative transportation has been arranged to ferry passengers with valid train tickets.

Shosholoza Meyl apologises for the inconvenience caused and assures all passengers that the planned changes will contribute positively in ensuring a pleasant experience on our trains.
